A very technical approach on the construction of the canvas itself, sets the stage for a visual language rooted in both graphic design and industrial screenprinting.Obed Vleugels is a visual artist, crafting both expansive canvases and intimate works on paper. Central to his artistic approach is a dedicated focus on mastering the technical intricacies of the craft. This is what guides his creative process, coupled with the precise application of diverse materials, particularly those associated with industrial screenprinting techniques. Intrigued by the profound themes of memory and recollection, Vleugels practice strives to encapsulate and interpret the intricate nuances of the memory. As such he is continuing to&nbsp; construct a personal, yet relatable, memory narrative that is purposeful and enduring.Inevitable rules and systems, along with the unpredictabilities of technique, dictate the visual development of each artwork. Obed engages in dialogue with these, valuing every influence. It's a vulnerable stance he seeks to document in his work, revealing how susceptible we are, yet also how we can embrace the external. Ingenuity and genius are questioned, and success is attributed to a series of sometimes strategic but equally random intermediate steps in which the artist is more of a curator or coordinator than a creator. Throughout, we find traces of a strong religious affinity pulling the images towards themselves. Both hesitation and dedication take center stage here, reflecting the artistic psyche. The studio (Mechelen, Belgium, 2013-2024) has been relocated several times, and is now housed in a repurposed Gingerbread factory. In the studio, landscapes of polyester screenprint mesh are transformed and reorganized on a daily basis; they shift and change like sand dunes in the desert. The woven mesh, discarded by large manufacturers from home and abroad, would be salvaged and reconstructed as canvas and as a carrier for visual language. From this rich source of color and materiality, the work emerges, restoring meaning to this residual material. We've occupied and shared studios, collaborated artistically, and through all that I was able to witness the youth and development of his artistic journey. I've developed an intimate fascination with his work, built upon his radical techniques.. ... but there is more than stories of the secret life of glue, the emulsive struggle of screen printing inks and paint, and the surprising textures of refurbished aluminum –– though these are vital to his process and result in his characterising style. It is the multilayered depth of his creations that truly defines them. His pieces invite an immersive engagement, beckoning the viewer to lean in closely, to discern the intricate details that lie hidden at first glance. But they also require the viewer to step back, to appreciate the overarching narratives and set of symbols that emerge within a series and span across his oeuvre. Each interaction with his art unveils a complex recursion — a perpetual interplay of references that echo both visually and thematically through the realms explored on earth and beyond. During a recent visit, Obed unveiled the latest iterations of his series. Rather than showing printed reproductions, he chose to prepare variations of his new works specifically designed for travel abroad. The ten canvases in this exhibition were initially unstretched and were presented accordingly during a private viewing at the studio one week before the opening. Stretching the works onto the industrial screenprint frames requires a significant effort and investment. Although it results in a bold and compelling presentation, I always grieve over the loss of the typical rough cut, glued and thus distinctive edges and various textures. But at the request of the hospital, Where I was invited to host a solo exhibition in 2023, I am showcasing large canvases. While building upon the technical approach of the paper works, these canvases incorporate a different technique developed since 2018. In these pieces, discarded screen printing mesh from industrial sources becomes the carrier for visual constructions serving as an external memory. Here I store valuable discoveries, memories, and &nbsp;bits of wisdom. (my memory is a sieve / mijn geheugen is een zeef / een zeef is mijn geheugen) Since 2022, my studio has been situated in a section of a gingerbread factory where the archive of the hospital used to be housed before they built their new headquarters. Here, the reclaimed mesh is carefully restored, trimmed, reassembled, and saturated to achieve new purposes. It indicated where the foreground was in relation to the background. In essence, they were references, arrows without points. A guide for the viewer; an underlined word draws attention, a floating image can finally land. One would expect that a line evolving into an arrow finally provides clarity, direction, and helps us move forward. But everything depends on the context in which the arrow is found; where it begins and where it ends, and what to find there. Arrows are cast as bait to provoke new connections, to attract attention elsewhere. The title 'Pointless Arrows' refers to a collection of digital and analog images (see archive 1.1 and archive 1.2). The quality of these images lies not in deliberate aesthetic consideration, but in the aesthetics of randomness.
